Florida State University Shooting: Newly Released Records Highlight Police Response and Suspect’s ChatGPT Activity

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Authorities have made public new evidence related to the 2025 shooting at Florida State University, including body camera footage, 911 recordings, and other investigative materials, according to Local 10 News.

The incident, which occurred on April 17, 2025, resulted in two fatalities and six people injured by gunfire. Video from responding officers shows police arriving within three minutes of the first shots and confronting the suspect, Phoenix Ikner, who was shot in the jaw.

Footage captures a dramatic response, including an officer who rode a motorcycle onto campus and fired at the suspect before dismounting. Additional surveillance video shows students running from the student union as Ikner pursued them closely.

Leon County Sheriff Walter A. McNeil revealed that Ikner had longstanding involvement with the Sheriff’s Office Youth Advisory Council and noted that his stepmother serves as a deputy. Authorities also confirmed that one of the firearms used was a former service weapon previously assigned to his stepmother but no longer in active use, according to Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell.

Records obtained by WCTV indicate that Ikner had interacted with ChatGPT prior to the attack. Initially, his conversations focused on everyday topics such as schoolwork and personal matters, but in the days leading up to the shooting, his questions shifted.

He reportedly asked about how firearms operate, peak activity times on campus, and how previous school shooting cases were prosecuted. ChatGPT responses included general information, such as noting that the student union is typically busiest between late morning and early afternoon—a timeframe that aligned with when the attack occurred.

Ikner now faces multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and several counts of attempted murder, and could face the death penalty.

In the aftermath, relatives of one of the victims have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. A company spokesperson expressed sympathy for those affected and stated that, after identifying an account believed to be linked to the suspect, the company cooperated fully with law enforcement.

The spokesperson added that ChatGPT is designed to interpret user intent responsibly and that ongoing improvements are being made to enhance safety.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has also opened an investigation into OpenAI, stating that artificial intelligence should benefit society and not contribute to harm, and calling for accountability regarding its potential role in the incident.
